Ideal for cross-curricular learning: Spanish and geography, providing great learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year. Students can develop their knowledge of the geography and scope of Los países hispanohablantes and the wider world, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their Spanish language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their Spanish vocabulary.
The quizzes feature 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, as well as three countries where a significant number of the population speak Spanish as either their first or home language: Gibraltar, Andorra, USA. They well as a whole-group team quiz, and are also perfect as a pair or small-group activity.
Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too.
There are four quiz challenges:
= Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from (24 questions)
= Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from (24 questions)
= Challenge 3 (36 questions) asks the question ¿Verdadero o falso? … es la capital de…
= Challenge 4 (36 questions) asks the question ¿Verdadero o falso? … es la capital de…
Where the answer is falso, students should give the correct response.
Challenges 1 & 3 and Challenges 2 & 4 are in the same file to save prep time and expense. The card numbers for Challenge 1 & 3 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenges 2 & 4 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years.

Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 30 French Christmas words, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some French-speaking countries Christmas traditions and figures, such as galette des Rois and Père Fouettard, which I’ve translated here as Father Fouettard, rather than Whipping Father. The vocabulary is really useful for stimulating discussion about French Christmas practices and customs. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow. The vocabulary list features the definite article, though some grids also have the indefinite article / plurals for additional challenge.
Grids 1-4 are French-French, where students are prompted with the French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. Grids 5-8 are English-French, where the prompts are given in English, and students look for the French translation in the grid. They also write the French translation of the English word. Grids 9 and 10 prompt students with a specific Christmas image, and they look for the corresponding French word in the grid, also completing a French vocabulary list for additional consolidation.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches and answer keys are in portrait format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located.
There is an alphabetical French-English Christmas vocabulary list which students find really helpful. There are two formats: search grids and answer keys together, so that they can be printed out and copied double-sided, and search grids / answer keys as separate files.

Christmas provides a great learning opportunity in Italian class. Activities featuring Italian Christmas vocabulary provide a dual learning platform, where students can learn about Christmas in Italy, at the same time as revisiting and revising language they have already engaged with. Using Italian Christmas images and vocabulary enables students to engage with traditions and customs in Italian-speaking countries, comparing and contrasting them to other Christmas practices they know or follow. It’s a really useful way of stimulating discussion about Christmas in Italy and other Italian-speaking countries. There are 5 Italian to Italian grids, where students are prompted with the Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. There are also 5 English to Italian grids, where the prompts are given in English. Students look for the Italian translation in the grid. They also write the Italian translation of the English word.
There is an answer grid for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The answer keys help them develop independence in their learning, and also provide them with an additional opportunity to engage with the Italian vocabulary. The word searches and answer keys are in landscape format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located.
The word searches are useful in a range of learning contexts - as starters, refreshers, finishers, fun-time fillers and for sub / cover lessons at any time during the Christmas / Holiday season.

Italian Christmas Io ho… Chi ha… ? is a whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the Italian Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing Italian Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 Italian Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in Italian-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A Io ho… Chi ha…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A ***Hi…? Sì (No), io ho…***. This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.

This European Day of Languages quiz focuses on a range of topics and themes about Europe. Students can broaden and develop their knowledge of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The quizzes work well as a whole-group team quiz, and are also perfect for pair or small-group activities.
The quizzes are for older students, who have a more developed understanding, knowledge and awareness of the world. Some responses will be generally well-known to students, others less so, as the questions range from basic general knowledge to more specialized factual knowledge. This ensures that the activity is equally about reflecting on what students know, as it is about what they can learn. In this way, the quizzes aim not only to consolidate existing knowledge, but also to enable students to learn more about Europe. The questions and answers also provide a comprehensive framework for further exploration of Europe, which both broadens and enriches the learning experience.
I generally give students multiple opportunities over the school year to play the quizzes, not just on or around the European Day of Languages. Before we play, I always screen a clear map of Europe, to ensure that students can visualize it in its entirety, the location of individual countries within it, and in relation to each other. This provides an important learning context for students. The quiz opens with general questions about Europe, and then moves on to questions about a range of individual European countries.
There are 80 questions across two challenges:
Challenge 1: 56 multiple-choice questions, with four response options to choose from. The correct response is in capital letters.
Challenge 2: 24 questions in TRUE / FALSE format. Where the answer is false, students should additionally give the correct response.
The questions address and topics such as: music and the Arts; daily life; famous figures; geography; history; landmarks; language and linguistics; literature; politics; science; social history; society

Ideal for the European Day of Languages - an instant and comprehensive introduction to Europe , perfect for developing knowledge of European countries, capital cities and national flags.
This kind of classroom display provides a real learning opportunity during September, in the run-up to, and on the European Day of Languages. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters help students develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe. It’s useful to show students a clear map of Europe, so that they can visualise the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with Europe, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities.
There is a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, and also some countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Some countries have two posters, such as Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic - you can choose either the more frequently-used Greece or the Hellenic Republic to display.

There are two formats to choose from - Europe map background or plain without frame, which keeps prep costs at a minimum. Laminate if you can, even though it’s extra prep time and expense. The posters display better, as flashcards they’re a lot easier to manipulate, and they do remain in excellent condition for years, so you’ll be able to recycle them many times.

Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, with an additional 3 where a significant number of the population speak Spanish as their first or second language. The word searches help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Spanish-speaking world, and just how widely Spanish is spoken around the globe.
In Grids 1-4, students search for a particular country. In Grids 5 & 6, they search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7 gives 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Similarly, in Grid 8, there are 16 countries given, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10 show a selection of national flags, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag.

A whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the French Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing French Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 French Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in French-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A J’ai… Qui a…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A As-tu…? Oui (Non) j’ai… . This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.

Bingo games are really easy to differentiate, and there is a range of differentiated grid formats to choose from: 12-square grids; 30-square grids; picture only and blend of words & pictures, providing learners with a real opportunity to practice all four language skills.
This set of Christmas bingo games comprises the following:
= 40 picture-only bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages) You can give students a random selection of pages, with students selecting the order of grids they play from. You can also cut out the grids, and place them in a small bowl or similar object on tables. Students then select grids randomly from the bowl. Mots cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 41 countries / territories where French is an official language.
The word searches help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Francophone world, and just how widely it is spoken around the globe. I’ve used the definite article for the countries, so that students can see which countries are masculine, and which feminine, which in turn helps consolidate knowledge of gender in French.
Grids 1-4: students search for a particular country.
Grids 5 & 6: students search for a range of capital cities.
Grid 7: 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid.
Grid 8: 16 countries, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid.
Grids 9 & 10: a selection of national flags, students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag.

Whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of vegetables in French. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too - particularly with***silent s, the non-/audible sound of x (deux and dix for example)*** and so on. I point out particular phonemes and sounds too - ch in champignons and the eu in chou-fleur for example.
The aim of the game is to create a French sentence chain as quickly as possible, starting with J’ai la première carte, and ending with the final card, C’est la dernière carte. The game also works well if the sentence sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my young beginner learners, but I’ve also played the game with my older adult learners, who really enjoy it too. The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are familiar with the written word, and starting to link spelling with sound. Try to print in colour if you can - it adds to the visual appeal of the game, which is a real motivator for learning.
There are 28 vegetables featured in the game: artichoke; asparagus; aubergine; green beans; beetroot; broccoli; Brussels sprout; cabbage; carrot; cauliflower; celery; cucumber; garlic; leek; lettuce; mushroom; onion; peas; green pepper; red pepper; yellow pepper; potato; sweet potato; radish; spinach; sweetcorn; tomato; zucchini.
All the vegetables may not be in my longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective moves beyond simply learning individual units of vocab - the images help students infer meaning from context, supported by the visual prompts and clues - this in turn supports them in developing their French language skills in the longer and more complex sentences. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun.
The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students applying their developing French language knowledge creatively and practically, as they make game cards for the class - this is a really popular activity with my students.

Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. It focuses on 33 Spanish Christmas words, which are also useful as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and customs, and what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too.
There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, where students are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. There’s a Spanish-English Christmas vocabulary reference sheet - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find the gifts and work out what that is in Spanish - only the prompt the gift appears in the reference list.
